--- alias: user-guide-take-ownership-protocol-instance description: "This documentation outlines the process for a user to assume ownership of a protocol instance" --- # Take Protocol Instance Ownership :lock: ProtocolInstance.**TakeOwnership** ## Overview This operation allows you to become the new owner of the **Protocol Instance**. At the **Protocol** level, you can define the default owner for all the **Protocol Instances** and while the instance is open, you have the possibility to take ownership of the protocol instance, becoming the new owner. ## Setup No special setup is required other than to meet the preconditions of the transaction. ## Preconditions * Protocol Instance exists, is active and is in the system state *Open*. * The user has an active Employee object associated with it. ## Sequences of steps ### Step 1 1. Select a Protocol **Instance**. 2. Optionally, enter a comment. 3. Select **Take Ownership**. ![Protocol_Instance_Take_Ownership][Protocol_Instance_Take_Ownership] !!! note **Note:** For security reasons, this operation is, by default, visible only for specific roles, which can be pre-defined. To take ownership, you need to have at least one of these roles. This restriction is not related with the state role; the state role is needed just to perform and edit.
